Book Give-Away/ The problem with attractive people

I bet you think I’m going to say that the problem with attractive people is that they’re conceited or used to privilege or they see the world differently from regular people. Probably true, but nope, that’s not what this blog is about.

The problem with attractive people is that it is so hard to write interesting descriptions of them in books. When the heroine is describing the hero, (or the other way around) she needs to do it in a way that not only gives the reader a basic visual image, but also tells us he’s attractive.

However, beyond writing about a few distinguishing characteristics–blond, brunette, square jaw, blue eyes or brown–you can’t describe a person’s face at all. People look vastly different from one another, but it’s nearly impossible to detail those differences with words.

This makes describing a handsome guy or beautiful girl that much harder, and now that I’m revising book number 18, I feel like I’ve run out of fresh ways to do it. I want to write:

He had two eyes, a nose, and a mouth–and they were placed in just the right areas of his face.

You see my problem.

So here’s the deal: Write a description of a handsome guy or a beautiful girl in the comment box. I don’t care what color eyes, hair, or skin he or she has–I have a lot of beautiful people in my books. I’ll get around to your favorite type eventually.

I may use all or part of your description at some point in one of my books. (Heck, I feel like there are so few ways to write up attractive people that I may have already used your description before you even write it.)

I’ll choose two comments and those people can have whichever one of my books they want. (With the exception of My Double Life, which still isn’t out yet–but hey, May 13 isn’t that far away. Yay!)

Happy writing.

“His eyes…were the most beautiful shade of green – that I seriously froze. I couldn’t even blink.”

I locked eyes with the most beautiful piece of humanity that had ever been created, or even imagined. His deep-set, honey-brown eyes, perfect aquiline nose, and luscious, full lips, were in perfect proportion and symmetry on his chiseled, bronzed face. His soft brown hair fell in tousled ringlets across his wide brow, while his chin was graced with golden stubble, the amount perfectly calculated to give that ruggedly-handsome, devil-may-care, aura that defined his persona.

As a reader what is important to me is his size & build and how the female character sees him. If she thinks he is hot then I am going to picture him hot. I often change hair or eye color to my personal liking.
Looking at him made my heart hurt, the way it hurt when I saw the sunset over the Grand Canyon or when I see a Monet or hear The Flower Duet from Lakmé. The way it hurts every time I experience true beauty.

His face was so hot he created his own breeze that ruffled his hair as he walked by. I think the rest of my Sprite might have evaporated too. And I really coulda used a drink.

His muscled chest shone in the sunlight, and his dark tangle of shoulder-length curls resisted the breeze, but what really caught my attention was the look in his eyes as he stared at me, as if he couldn’t believe that he’d finally found what he was looking for.

Past the refrigerated section of the bakery walked a guy so alluring that, for a moment, I actually looked away from the cheesecake.

He had the airbrushed look of a celebrity, with the added in bonus that he was here before me, living and breathing and real. Or was he? The surrealness of it made me want to take both hands and touch him, just to make sure he wasn’t an illusion. Yet he was gorgeous, and if he was just a figment of my imagination, I hoped that I’d never find out.

Red still had cherub cheeks despite the fact that he was over 20. It annoyed him that dimples would sneak onto his cheeks whenever he smiled. Despite the fact that he had dark hair and tan skin from working in the Arizona sun, he still looked like a teenager.

I stared. I gaped. My chin was getting some serious grass stains but I couldn’t look away. The boy standing before me was the most gorgeous thing I had ever seen. Hot didn’t cover it. Cute was so far out it was probably on pluto (yes, the not-a-planet). The boy standing in front was *beautiful* and… looking at me? I closed my mouth quickly and banged my teeth together as a result. I covered my embarrassment with a smile. “Hi, umm so… newbie?” Stupid, stupid, stupid! Of course he was new! You don’t inhabit a campus this small with such a Hottie for a whole semester and not know it!
The boy ran a hand through his gorgeously messy hair and I sighed wanting to do the same. And then I blushed. I *never* act like this. I don’t know what had come over me. “Umm yea. I just got here yesterday so I’m not really familar with the layout. Could you point me toward the dean’s office?”
So. Hot. A guy asking for directions? A *gorgeous* guy asking for directions? He was so not human. I took the boy’s arm. “Better yet I’ll show. I have time.” I gave the boy a reasuring smile and made sure not to look too excited. Technically I had a class in less than 20 minutes but that was plenty of time to take this gorgeous newbie to the dean’s office. And get his phone number. And stare at his beautiful green eyes…
I was staring again. I looked away (as hard as it was) and started walking. “Come on.”

Guy describing girl: She was the sort of girl you just knew all the other girls would love to hate. What made her all the more alluring was that she didn’t seem aware of the effect she had on those around her. Of course, before he could seriously entertain the notion of pursuing her he would have to find out if this was sweet humility on her part or if she fit the bimbo stereotype that her blonde hair and bright blue eyes hinted at.

Girl describing guy: Normally she found muscles off putting. They said to her, “I’ll always be there for you, my darling…except for the three and a half hours I spend at the gym every day.” There was an intensity to his grey eyes that caught her attention though, and she couldn’t quite write him off as the superficial I-will-wow-you-with-my-pecs type. Maybe it was just wishful thinking on her part. Maybe the way her fingers were itching to play with his wavy brown hair was overwhelming her good sense, but she felt a sudden urge to approach him. She suppressed a sigh of exasperation and forced herself to walk in the other direction. She was obviously losing her mind.

He smiled and I stopped everything. Stopped walking, thinking, even breathing. I had seen him every day for the last year, but I had never really SEEN him. Not until now when he smiled. Before today, if anyone had bothered to ask me, I would have called him nondescript: tallish, thinnish, with hair somewhere between blond and brown. But when he smiled, his blue eyes twinkled and an unexpected dimple came out to tease me.

Usually, I look for the good-looking, everyone likes him kind of guy. This time though, my heart has chosen a pig. His crooked-teeth smile with his beautiful dimples make me melt! When he sings to me, I feel like the luckiest girl in the world. The way he tries to impress me by doing the funniest things that always turn into disasters, is adorable. I know truly know the phrase,” Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.” I want him to ask me out so bad! I tried to ask him to a movie but he seemed uninterested. It doesn’t make sense to me, usually when I talk to a guy, he comes flying to me. This time it’s different, he acts as if he doesn’t want me, and it causes me to love him more! Ah what should I do?! I guess I can try by being patient, maybe someday he will be attracted to me. Oh! I just realized I get to see him tomorrow, I am so excited!

    – To me attraction isn’t just looks, sometimes if he is a great, funny guy, the readers are in love with him.

I looked up from the puddle I’d become into the face of my Dorothy. He smiled and showed one perfect dimple, on his right cheek, but who’s checking. His blue eyes crinkled and glowed, in fact his whole persona seemed to glow. Then he was gone, my angel was gone. Ok, turning the corner wasn’t gone, but he was gone from sight and that was more than enough to mourn over.

His eyes were deep blue like a swimming pool, that you are ready to dive into. His nose was perfectly placed below his eyes. When he cracked a smile he insured you of a frendship that would last forever. When he ran his hands through his curly, thick hair, it was hard for you to resist doing the same. When he spoke he was most polite. He makes you melt to the floor, with every word he says.

More than anything its how much they smile. How often they show there joy, and to what extent they show it. Second is there eyes. You can tell so much about a person by there eyes. where they look and what there eyes tell you when they look at you. Thrid is the body type if they are fat you know that they are lazy. If they have a nice body you know that they are active and (most of the time)fun. Forth is the hair. the hair has to compliment the face and say something about his personality. Fifth is the lips and words definide lips are the best with out cracks or peels. the man of dreams can not swear it like drops a bomb on everything. My perfect man: dark hair perfectly unset but geled, pal beautiful skin without blemish, dark green or light blue eyes, tall, every muscle definied but not huge, big strong man hands that show that he has worked.

His Eyes, the most beautiful shade of stunning blue, it sends a sharp pain to my heart. His smile you can see from a thousand miles away. The way his dark hair catches the light gives it a tint of blue that makes his eyes stand out even more.. and the way he talks to you, his voice as soft as the wind flying softly pass your ears. He is tall and Slender but muscular. He has the most beautiful Bone structure, his cheek bones sit tall under his eyes. The way he looks at me is as if he is trying to figure me out, peer down into my soul.. Become me in a sence.. but when he touches me my body caves in..i forget how to breath and it seems like im dying but its an amazing death.. the cold chills take over my body and the Flutterflys in my stomach help me take flight. Im in a completely different dimension when i look at him, He cannot be real. He is a god, but he seems so human..he is out of my league but seems interested. He is so kind, yet seems so troubled.. He is human and trys to be which makes him so attractive.

When I heard his voice, saying, “Are you okay?” I looked up from my tear-covered hands. There he was. I wasn’t dreaming. He really was there. His blue eyes had an apologetic look in them, with a touch of wariness to see what my reaction to his appearance would be. But his lips were already curving up into the smile that I loved so much. The freckles on his face made his skin seem so approachable, so touchable. One little freckle (one of hundreds on his face and hands) on his bottom lip drew my attention like it always did. And I decided that if he would just apologize, I was finally going to kiss that freckle, kiss those lips, and touch that face that I thought I would never see again.

Seriously I have never felt so silly (I was blushing as I wrote) or had so much fun. This is why I am a reader- not a writer. (no giggling please)
He was, without a doubt, one of the most handsome of men she had ever seen. His strong, square jaw that was covered with the beginning of a rough beard was peppered with spots of shiny silver that added to the mystery of his age. His rather longer than appropriate hair curled slightly above his ears and dark thick brows, giving him the look of a man none too concerned with fine grooming and yielding to the expectations of society. His sun kissed nose was strong, not straight in any way, lending support to the stories she had entertained about him being a rake rather than a gentleman. The tiniest of scars running along the top of it hinted of perhaps having a hand at fisticuffs. She was nearly undone as he lifted his gaze to her and their eyes met. She was lost in a sea of green that took her breath away. Were they green? Never had she seen that color before. As she began to lose herself in them she could see the specks of brown that surrounded the iris getting lighter as they danced outward toward his dark lashes. Oh those lashes! Surely to be the envy of every female she knew, yet there was something so masculine about the way they fanned closed in a slow lazy blink. When he spoke she was immediately drawn to the upturned corner of the most secretive lips she had ever laid eyes on. Those lips moved again. Was he asking her something? She slowly came to the realization he was indeed speaking after those lips erupted into the most dazzling display of a smile she had ever been witness to. She felt her knees buckle and the room around her began to tilt….

He had the most perfect teeth…could teeth be perfect? His were. His hair was windblown and messy and yet each strand was in a perfect place…like they belonged there. His eyes were a shade of blue that before I met him, I would have believed only existed on angels. Was he an angel? As I stared at the dimple at the corner of his mouth, I decided it was definitely possible.

If I’m not mistaken, I’ve got a copy of MY DOUBLE LIFE coming to me anyway. Looking forward to it too. This has been like watching a kid grow, “Oh, look how our little MY DOUBLE LIFE is all grown up now!” **tears**

People fill in missing information as they read, why do the descriptions need to be verbose?

I lingered on the sparkle in his eyes and then my gaze wandered down the line of his jaw. I paused again at that delicious dip in his throat, you know, the place alongside his adam’s apple. Such a curious name, a body part named for a biblical person. (Depending on the intent of the scene, I might try something smarmy here like, “That’s an apple I’d love to take a bite of” or something about Eve being thrown out for inappropriate behavior.)

Damn, she tosses her hair like a super model. Which is a hoot, as every aspect of her life is a cliche.

When she smiles at me like that, I feel like I have a crush on her. A best friend girl crush. No wonder the boys are always in her face.

I doubt those are much help since I seem to move from description to plotting. Hmmm…..maybe I should actually work on one of these manuscript bits I’ve got lingering around here? Well okay, maybe after I’ve taken care of my farmville farm.

It was my first day at a new school and I had already made a new friend (okay so I wish). Then I saw the most handsome guy I had ever seen in my life- and his locker was right next to mine!! He had dirty blond hair combed back and just a little combed into spikes in the front, and the most amazing eyes I have ever seen, they were a golden brown, I knew that guys only had looks like that in storybooks, the fantasy kind that I read so fast that some people couldn’t keep up. Then he looked at me, and smiled a smile that could melt any girl’s heart.
“Hey, you must be the new girl, I’m Mike.”
” Yeah, I am, my name is Katie.”
Ohmygosh, he was talking to me!!
“Cool, maybe we’ll have some classes together.” he said as he started to walk away, then he turned and looked over his shoulderand smiled again,
    “See you around Katie.”
At that moment I didn’t know that I was going to fall in love, but I thought as he walked away, oh boy I am in trouble.

I looked up from my book and swept the hair from my face. He was walking toward me. He looked as sweet as a day dream with the dangerous features of a nightmare. I wasn’t sure if my mouth opened, but his soft, pink lips parted in the smirk I loathed him for. He was making fun of me. I made a great show of looking back at my book, but in my peripheral vision I watched him. His serious, dark eyes swept over the numerous tomes that surrounded him. The muscles in his shoulders shifted as he reached for a book. His dark t-shirt clung to him while his jeans hung loosely around his hips. Only when I read the gray lettering on his shirt did I realize that he had noticed me watching. I could feel the blood coloring my cheeks as he walked towards me. His dark brown hair bounced, every once in a while letting a blonde highlight catch the sun. My heart stopped and the restarted itself at a violent pace when he sat across from me. I waited for words to leave his perfect mouth, but nothing came. We continued staring for awhile each in our own heavens. He finally stood up and very gently, he leaned over and let his natural sunlight dazzle my world.

He had cheekbones. His body was like iced marble. And did I mention his cheekbones? Oh wait—too Twilight.

    Let’s try this:
Foreasmuch it is proper for a young lady to await the call of a gentleman upon her father before introductions were in order, she was not inclined to act upon his agreeable countenance and mien. It is a truth that his ten thousand pounds a year did not hurt his prospects either. Yikes—calling Colin Firth!

    How about:
His eyes glanced at her, and she knew that he knew she was watching him. It’s not that he looked perfect—after all most people have the two eyes, two ears, two lips that make things look right. It’s the fact that those eyes held a hint of mischief, the two ears were listening to her, and the two lips were quirked in a hint of a smile. It didn’t hurt that those eyes were the perfect shade of root-beer brown, the ears framed the perfect cheekbones, and the lips were perfect for talking or kissing. Maybe he WAS perfect.

The first thing I saw was his hand. It was draped over the back of his seat on the school bus we had taken. It was a distinguished hand. A mole right above the thumb was the only mark it had, but the way it was held. There was an air of non-chalance the person in that seat gave off. I hit his hand, totally by accident, as I resituated. He moved it, and looked around at me. As his head turned I saw more than the back of a closely shaved brown head. His jaw was square. His cheeks were such a way that it made a box of his face. An attractive box. His face was very broad. His nose was crooked in just a way that made it obvious he was no stranger to broken bones. He cocked his mouth in a half-smile, and I think he may have apologized. But I was too busy looking at his eyes. They were so dark, and they didn’t match his light hearted smile. His forehead was creased with tension, and when I listened into what he was saying I heard why. “-in your way.” He was being sarcastic!

They were a dark grey, the eyes that were staring back at us, deep, like they had seen too much. He couldn’t have been more than 17, with full lips curled up into a smirk and a cute nose that I, for one reason or another, kind of wanted to role on my shoulder-blade and brush my fingers threw his sleek black hair. He was tall too. Taller than my dad, let alone myself, with wide shoulders set in a stance that showed all of his strong and built body. And even Beside the fact that he was gorgeus, he also held this precence about him. Like I know who is incharge, you know who is in charge, we both know who is in charge but keep thatb thought in your head. I prayed a silent prayer to myself, that the day would go as slow as these few seconds had been…

    Jesslyn said-
I turned the corner and there he was. The man I’d seen so many times in my dreams. It had to be him, his hair was the exact shade of red. It was dark and pure as blood. His face had too many freckles to count but placed so beautifully, you felt like you just fell into a sea of stars. Normally, I’d love to see green eyes with red hair but his eyes were blue. Not the typical ocean blue that makes girls cry, but the blue sky with clouds that are ready to burst with rain. His lips were chapped as were everyones here in Arizona. He didn’t have muscles bulging from every part of his body but yet his body was perfect.
The part about his imperfect beauty wasn’t any physical features, but the light that shone from him. Everyone has a color and his was white. Pure and innocent, the exact white that I always look for in a boy. He had it, he had the beautiful white that made my legs ache.

My feet froze in place as I stared into the most exquisite emerald eyes I have ever beheld. Just when I thought my epitaph would read “Died of euphoria” my eyes left those pools of green. I felt myself literally salivating at the sight of his tall, lean, muscular frame. When my eyes traveled back to his face, it took all my will power not to reach my hands out and run my fingers through his thick, chocolate brown hair. To top it off, his voice was a euphoric rush of sound. Wait… his voice? I jerked myself back to reality as I realized he was speaking to me, “Hey, are you alright?” I felt my cheeks flush as I realized my mouth was gaping open like some air-deprived fish. I guess my epitaph would have to read “Died of embarrassment” instead.

Most guys are just the glance by type, and believe me, when you live in a small town, they become even less than that. However, two seats back and one row over, is the kind of face you never get sick of looking at. I find myself constantly holding back the urge to hold a ruler up to his face and measure the symmetry, but I don’t think a ruler is even exact enough to measure that kind of beauty. He only has one flaw, he always has pit stains. But hey give a beautiful guy a break he can’t do everything, I mean what do you think he is a women?

As I fastened my buckle, that’s when I saw him. Well, actually I only saw the dark blue hoodie pulled over the back of his head. Him and his hoodie sat in the window seat, smelling like shampoo and really good deodorant that probably had a name like Arctic Blast.

Headphones were on top of the hoodie, and long, tan fingers fiddled with an MP3 player. Trying not to be too obvious, I moved closer to figure out the high notes I kept hearing. I closed my eyes, breathing in his Arctic Blast while I concentrated. Huh. Mozart.

“Can I help you?” Even his voice was interesting–deep and chocolatey. I don’t know how to describe chocolatey. But I just knew it wasn’t vanilla.

His blueberry yogurt eyes were topped with crumbly granola hair and smothered in a honey glaze complexion. Strawberry lips parted to reveal his whipped cream teeth in an angel food cake smile. Cinnamon roll ears perfectly accentuated his donut-hole dimples. At that moment I knew two things: One, I was hungry. And two, he was the most deliciously attractive man I had ever wanted to gobble up.

I’m not creative in this sense, but this post reminded me of that episode of Everybody Loves Raymond, when he writes that poem to compete with an old boyfriend of Debra’s and he writes it about her earlobes. Such a good episode.

When you see beauty, someone that pulls your gaze like a magnet to a fridge, you instantly see her little details. “Is her nose too small, big?”, “Are her eyes blue, or green?”,”Is she cute when she smiles?”. Her smile reflects white like snow on a sunny day, her skin, allmost as bronze as the helm of a spartan warrior. It is the eyes that some believe to be the door to the soul, inner beauty can allmost be defined by her eyes. Glowing with that shade of green, that small reflection of light, the flutter of her eyelashes. It is beauty that I see in her, and that beauty has struck me for her touch. When you imagine the most beautifull you image her.

At first notice she may not seem much to you but once you can see her for what she is and find courage to speak to her, you begin to see her beautiful smooth hair that shines in the light of the sun. She can leave you frozen when she lockes eyes with you, her eyes cant be matched with any other girls eyes, they are to valuable and rear. They sparkel and shine a bright yet clam motion of light blue. She walks with the most mature walk that stunds you as she walks by, If your lucky you can see her smile and wave to you like you were in heaven with her.

His chiseled abs glistened as the sunlight hit the beads of chlorinated water dripping down his body. As he took his stance on the diving block all of the girls eyes were on him, young and old, adoring the way the water perfected his wavy black hair. Even though they couldn’t see his stunning blue eyes behind the goggles, there was one girl in the audience who knew just what it felt like to be looked at everyday by them.

I remember his eyes. They were blue, and they stood out underneath dark brown eyebrows, surprising for a blond boy. The first time I would have described them as ice, because they were so piercing and he intimidated me. But when I looked again, there was a warmth that arose as he smiled; his eyes crinkled, and the ice cracked.

I’ve seen my fill of beautiful people. You know the type–perfect hair, perfect, teeth, clear skin, not a thing out of place. The first time I saw him, I mentally filed him away in the section of people that could afford (or at least had the knack for) the real life equivalent of being airbrushed.

But no matter how often I looked away, my gaze kept sliding back over to him. I could almost see the sunlight /ting!/ off of his teeth, but what drew my attention and held it wasn’t the fact that he looked like a young Adonis in the flesh, it was what was under all that.

That indescribable softness of face that hinted at kindness. The way his eyes reminded me of light and sunshine even though they were dark brown. The way he held himself, confident in who he was without seeming to expect all of us girl-types to swoon at his feet.

But what made me reconsider how I’d filed him was the way his smile dimmed when he thought no one was looking. It was still there, but it looked more familiar now that the brilliance of it wasn’t blinding me anymore. It hinted at small insecurities, doubts, and fears. It made him less of marble and more human. Adonis as he might have been in real life.

He took off his bike helmet and pushed his sunglasses up on top of his head, leaning his roadie against his hip. It takes one good-looking guy to make helmet hair attractive, and trust me, this guy could pull it off. He looked like someone had cut out the cover photo on a teen celebrity magazine and glued it on his face. You know; tan, high cheekbones, straight nose, square jaw, hair the color of melted sunshine… the works. He glanced at me with bright green eyes that I honestly wouldn’t mind getting lost in, and he did a double take. I inwardly did a little happy-dance, because he’d looked at me.
    Twice.

I looked up into the darkest eyes I’d ever seen set in a face that made my mouth go dry. To call him gorgeous would have been the lamest understatement of all time. He could have been a model for a painting of a Greek god. Then he flashed a dazzling smile and I knew I was utterly lost.

Tousled to the side, his hair was brown, but dark as if someone had tinted it with a piece of charcoal. I tried to turn aside, trying to act like I didn’t notice him, but it was impossible. I was practically in a trance, unable to look away. His eyes were a stormy blue, intimidating, and very intriguing…. I noticed his expression may not have been that he was mad about something, maybe more… contemplative, maybe even fear. He ran his hand swiftly through his hair. That’s how I noticed the front of his hair was up in what could only be considered a “cone.” It made me want to giggle, his hair-do reminding me of a ten-year-old…

Don’t drool. Do not drool. I reiterated in my mind as I caught a glimpse of his face. I couldn’t remember what I was here for. Those steely gray eyes of his had captured my attention, and they weren’t going to let me out of their clutches anytime soon. I should have felt embarrassed, but I was certain he got these kinds of elongated stares from girls often. Very often. He broke eye contact, giving me the opportunity to scan the rest of his face. His tanned skin perfectly offset the white of his teeth that were smiling-at me! I felt the blood rush to my cheeks. He had noticed me staring. And yet I couldn’t look away. Those shining pearly whites of his, framed by plump pink lips, led into a defined jawline that set my heart aflutter, and that in turn guided me to his high, sculpted cheekbones. His eyebrows matched the exact color of his sandy brown hair, cut close shaven but not overly so. It left his ears exposed, and from what I could tell, they were perfect too. The unique combination of brown hair and heather gray eyes was refreshing; he wasn’t your stereotypical blonde surfer dude. His looks might have been TOO overwhelmingly perfect if it hadn’t been for his slightly crooked nose, like maybe someone had punched him in the face and broken it. This only intrigued me more. Self consciously, I tucked a piece of hair behind my ear. To my disappointment-no, it went beyond disappointment-devastation, he turned away then, probably heading to his modeling job. I quickly brightened as I got a nice view of his from the back. His t-shirt perfectly modeled his sculpted forearms, and I would bet anything that he had a sexy six-pack to match, and some serious biceps. His broad shoulders highlighted his muscled back, and the sunlight began to glint off his hair. My breath caught in my throat when he turned around to catch me still staring. This was partially because he had caught me, and partially because of his gorgeousness, which had just hit me all over again. Hard. In the face. His lips curved into the hottest smirk I’d ever seen, and then he stepped around the corner and was gone. It was like ice water had been thrown on my face, and I gasped at the shock. It was like I was a preteen, dealing with my very first crush. I simply had to find him. Snatching up my purse, I rapidly followed in hot pursuit
