My baby started kindergarten today.

I’ve been looking forward to my new found free time, but still I cried after I dropped her off at her class. Which was especially bad because I had to stop by the grocery store and pick up milk. Oh well, let the customers wonder, I always say.

Then I came home and watched The Nanny while I ate breakfast. My daughter has only been gone for hours and I’ve already slipped into the masses who watch daytime TV. The commercials they show during this time slot are especially depressing because they are all adds to help you become a message therapist or a medical assistant. Basically they say, “I stopped being a loser who stays home watching daytime TV and made something of my life; you can too!”

I think I need some chocolate.

Holy cow! Starting kindergarten in July? Poor thing! I can’t believe she’s in school already. Time flies. Enjoy your time at home alone. I recommend watching BBC America shows. They still have dorky commercials, but Bargain Hunt, Cash in the Attic and How Clean is Your House are my faves.

Congratulations, Janette, and welcome to the SASAHMSSOHFT (She’s A Stay At Home Mom So She Obviously Has Free Time) group! I have entered the group twice now and every time I thought I would go crazy when someone asked me what I was going to do with all my free time! When I stopped to list all the items on my list they would just stare at me with their eyes glazed over. I found that I actually have less free time than I did when I had kids at home. Amazing!

See, that is what I’m afraid of. I think I’ll have more free time, but people who belong to the SASAHMSSOHT keep telling me otherwise.

Your daughter is adorable, Janette, I can see why you’re weeping!
And yeah, I’m a NANNY lover, too. I think Fran Fine is hysterical and Mr. Sheffield delicious. I liked him WAY, WAY BACK in time when he was a star on “Days of Our Lives” when my oldest was a nursing baby. He’s now 25 so I kicked the soap opera habit pretty fast, thank goodness.
And free time? My young adult kids take more time and give me more stress than when they were all young and I homeschooled!

My baby starts next month and I don’t care what you guys say, I’m convinced that my life will be easier than ever. Half a day to myself? Pure heaven.

and yes, I’m also refusing to think back to how I thought I’d have so much more time on my hands when my oldest went to school, and then when she went ALL DAY. I’m sure the fact that life sped up instead of slowed down was just a coincidence and I won’t hear otherwise!

That’s why we’re fiction authors, Josi. We believe firmly in what everyone else is telling us is fantasy.
