How are you at blond jokes?

The bow-tied one and I are having a disagreement. This is usual for the revision process. We have many disagreements, generally because he does not see nor appreciate my artistic genius. (At least that is what I keep telling him.)

The latest thing is a blond joke problem. Here is the situation: (SPOILER ALERT–this next part contains some of the plot for my next book, which will be aptly named: Yes, I Stole This Idea From Hannah Montana. Okay, that is actually not the title–that is just what I’m afraid people will think when they see the book, but I digress. If you’re one of those people who doesn’t want to know about the plot before you read the book, don’t read on.)

Alexia, the main character is secretly a double for famous rock star, Kari Kingsley. She is even lip-synching some concerts while Kari is busy with other things. Kari Kingsley is half Latina but has dyed her hair blond and also has been known to say some stupid things to the press. During the course of the story, the press thinks that Kari is cheating on her boyfriend, soap star Micheal Jung, because they see what appears to be Kari out with another rock star, Grant Delray.

Kari can’t fess up that she has a double and so when a cameraman catches up with her and asks if she is dating both Micheal and Grant, she answers, “Not at the same time.”

A couple pages later I say:

The entertainment shows gave Kari’s botched dating explanation a lot of play time. the late night shows commented on it too. They said things like: “Well, who would have thought it–it looks like Kari Kingsley is a natural blond after all.”

The bow-tied one wrote that he didn’t get this joke. (By the way, he is blond, so that might have something to do with it.)

So my question is: Did you get the blond joke and if not, can you think of a better one to use?

Muchas gracias

  1. I get it, but you should also know there is another connotation to “natural blonde” that you may or may not be aware of. Usually, as I’ve heard it, it means we got a look at her pubic hair. Maybe using the term “real blonde” might be better? Or even, I guess her roots are blonde too. But I think kids will get the blonde joke reference.

How about, we don’t know how many blondes it takes to change a lightbulb, but it only takes one to date two guys, but not at the same time.

  2. I got it too, but I agree with the first poster. Is there another term besides “natural”? I like “real” blond or “true blond.”

  3. It works for me, but I also see where he’s coming from. I mean, we don’t limit blonde jokes to natural blondes. Those who dye blonde know what they’re getting themselves into.

You could say something like “forget about hair color — K.K. is blonde through and through” or “if there ever was a celeb that lived up to her fake hair color, it’s K.K.” or, “not only is her hair fake, her life is too.” or, her relationship is too or something.

  4. First commentor, WHAT?! Ew!

    I get it as is.

If you really wanted to mess with it – try, “maybe the blonde hair treatment is getting to her.” Or, “Maybe the FDA should look into the hazardous affects of over-bleaching.”

But Janette, you are the literary genius, so I say, have at it.

  5. I got it, but it’s a little awkward for the scripted polish you expect of those night shows. I’d expect something like:

“It looks like Kari Kingsley’s blonde is more than skin deep.”
“In related news, it appears [or new studies show] that genetics play less of a role in hair color than we originally thought.”
“You can take the girl from the blonde but apparently not the blonde from the girl.”

  6. I don’t understand why the Bow-tied One DOESN’T get it. Makes perfect sense and it’s obvious. Also, I don’t think you need to worry about the dirty side some people have mentioned. It’s pretty clear that’s not what you’re referring to. Can’t wait to read it!

  7. Yes I so get it! But, i kind of thought that what Kari said was clever…like she was the one making the joke. Would the media get that she was the one making the joke? Or would they think she was saying it for real?

    I dunno.

either way, guess what books I have on my shelf that I just procured from our spit of a library?

    Just one wish
All’s fair in Love and war and highschool
